From Advisor towards Nuturer
Justine Tang(0727)
Justine says recent experience at a Christmas gathering of Osars has transformed her from an Advisor to a Nuturer of young Osars.
It was during the Christmas gathering in 2011 that sharing a song "突然想喝湯" reminded me of the emotional care and support needed by young Osars pursuing their undergraduate studies overseas.
Waiting for Osars to come home
I am most touched by the lyrics “家裡始終等候 其實有著誰”. When I lived aboard in the US and Spain, Osars’ family was the community I missed most after my immediate family. After relocating back to Hong Kong four years ago, waiting for young Osars to come back to HK during the holidays has become a family event as well.
Reflections on leadership development and mentoring program
Leadership development has been one of the focuses of Advisors of the Osar’s family. The Mentoring program has also stressed on the mentors helping mentees to make more informed choices about their field of study and career orientation. Nevertheless, the substance of the approach is as always, our love and care to nurture the younger ones to live out a life that unleash their full potentials. To be happy and healthy, to care for and contribute to the community, to receive and give love to your family is where one’s “power within” comes from.
Survival skills when you get sick
At a dinner gathering with Loretta Fan, John Wang, Adrian Lo and Yvette Boon on Jan 5, 2013, stories of Auntie Doreen and how Mung Chiang raised his daughter (http://www.princeton.edu/~chiangm/NotableByNoNo.pdf) were recollected. Various survival skills were discussed over Osars’ overseas experiences of illness, theft, sexual harassment and depression across the years. One of the shared wisdom is that Chinese food such as rice porridge or crackers bring a lot of comfort during sickness. Another smart tip is to tell mum only after you have recovered from the illness. “Even a small cold right before exam can make Mum freak out!” an Osar commented. In times of stress and depression, having Osars’ responses on Facebook posts always warms the heart.
Staying connected with family
Young Osars nowadays enjoy the benefits of communication technologies like Skype to talk to family and friends for free. While mum is usually the contact point to keep updated of latest development at home, listening to stories from dad is also a nourishing experience. One good example is John Wang’s response to his dad’s question “Do you understand what I am talking about?” over an two-hour analysis of “Why is
China best ruled by the Communist Party?”: “Hmm…I don’t quite understand. So, please tell me more.” John just stayed quiet to listen with a board smile without questioning why Dad reached this conclusion after months of research.

Hope the above tips will help younger Osars to grow and develop to the best by fostering a loving and caring relationship with the family!
